Barbara Brenner

Upon seeing her first piece of encaustic artwork, the search began to find a way to learn this fascinating ancient process.
Finding two great teachers at The Art School of Sandy Springs, the adventure began. And now, freed form a long career in graphics and advertising, Barbara has the time to explore and pursue her fascination with encaustic art, photography, botanicals - and at times bringing them all together. "Working with encaustics toys with my fascination of buried treasure! I can dig into the piece to unearth and reveal it's hidden beauty, or I can gently bury beautiful botanicals to suspend in time."

Though most of her career has been spent in creative design and photography direction her passion has finally taken her to total immersion in her painting.

"Practically speaking; my art is my energy. Encaustic painting has allowed me to indulge my fascination with the dimensional will adding a complex variety of elements, and depth to the colors I work with."

Glenda Chamberlain

I am a Canadian-born artist who, several years ago, began an exploration into mixed media and alternate art mediums through which I discovered encaustics.

Distressing techniques, natural decay processes, handmade papers, recycled elements, metals and pigment are used to influence the surface and provide depth to my work. Layer upon layer is constructed and then deconstructed; revealing a work of art that is an unpredictable yet purposely designed combination of accident and intent.

Encaustic provides me with the perfect tension between new and old.... contemporary art from an ancient process.

Valerie Dumas

took my first professional Encaustic workshop in 2005 where I learned the basics of this ancient art. The smells of wax, the gorgeous colors, oh the possibilities... needless to say, I was hooked. Since then I have taught myself different techniques and tricks, preferring to use non traditional tools. I'm inspired by coastal living and its color palette such as Cerulean Blue and Celadon Green. My current work depicts various aspects of nature, from abstract landscapes to whimsical blow flowers. Quoting Danny Kaye, "Life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it that you can." I guess in my lifetime, it will be wax.

Dru Molen

An avid fine artist and potter, Dru has studied with top professionals
since 1976 and this knowledge and experience is evident in her works in
encaustics. Drawing from real life images, Dru is able to capture those
images and make them come alive through the encaustic medium. With
encaustics she is combining the idea of two dimensional painting with
three dimensional pottery to produce very unique works of art.

Penny Treese

Penny has known she wanted to be an artist since the spry age of 4. Following years of art lessons, classes, and a degree in graphic design, Penny moved from Illinois to Atlanta, and for 17 years she toiled in the fast-paced world of advertising. She continued however to sketch, paint, and continue art classes.

The bleak economic situation turned out to be a strange blessing as Penny veered away from advertising and was offered a studio space within her favorite gallery in Decatur, Georgia. That’s where she discovered the freedom and healing that comes from intuitive painting. Penny revels in the process of sweeping and dripping and scrapping layers of translucent wax and oils, transforming this magical medley into luscious abstractions of nature.

Her focus is on the joy of the process, and leading by example so that her children may also chase after and realize their dreams.

Allison Miller

Artist Statement

Experiences and relationships create emotions that vibrate and resonate throughout life. My art is a representation of a constant struggle to control my surroundings and gain perspective through these emotions.

Intentional placement of objects brings deeper involvement when I’m painting abstract versus representational. Lines and image placement represent conflict and tension while colors and composition create dimension and spontaneity. I choose color to create vibration between the lines. The relationship of horizontal to vertical lines symbolizes control.

This process of a physically repetitive motion creates a meditative state. During this spiritual experience I reflect on the here and now and the past. My “Zen” series is a direct reflection of this process.
